What is hard water, and does Queensland have it?
Hard water is water carrying lots of dissolved minerals, mainly calcium and magnesium. It leaves white scale on taps, kettles and shower screens. Some South East Queensland homes have it, especially in parts of Ipswich, regional areas and on bore water, while other areas are softer.
You can not see hard water in a glass. You see what it leaves behind, and what it does to your plumbing and appliances over time. The good news is it is easy to fix.
How to tell if you have hard water at home
Look for white, chalky scale around your taps, spots on shower screens and glasses, a crust inside the kettle, and soap that never seems to lather. If you spot two or more of these, hard water is the likely cause.
- White, chalky scale on taps, shower heads and shower screens
- A crust of scale inside your kettle, which comes back quickly after cleaning
- Cloudy spots on glasses and dishes straight out of the dishwasher
- Soap and shampoo that struggle to lather, and a film left on the shower floor
- Dry-feeling skin and hair, and stiff or dull-looking laundry
- Scale building up in your hot water system and appliances
Is your South East Queensland water hard?
It depends on where you live. Unitywater describes Sunshine Coast water as generally soft (under 100 mg/L) and Moreton Bay water as neither hard nor soft (under 200 mg/L). Other areas vary by supply zone, and homes on bore water or in some regional pockets often have much harder water.
| Region | What to expect | Our suggestion |
|---|---|---|
| Sunshine Coast | Generally soft, according to Unitywater (under 100 mg/L) | Focus on taste and chlorine with a whole-home filter |
| Moreton Bay | Neither hard nor soft, according to Unitywater (under 200 mg/L) | A free test tells you if scale is worth tackling |
| Brisbane, Logan, Redland City and Gold Coast | Varies by supply zone, so check your water supplier or ask us | Book a free on-site test |
| Ipswich, Lockyer Valley and regional pockets | Some areas carry plenty of minerals | A water softener often makes a big difference |
| Any home on bore water | Often high in minerals | A softener, plus pre-filtration or UV where needed |
What hard water is doing to your home
Hard water builds limescale inside your pipes, hot water system and tapware, makes soap and detergent work harder, and leaves skin, hair and laundry feeling dull. Fixing it protects your plumbing and appliances and makes everyday life nicer.
- Limescale in pipes, hot water systems and tapware
- Appliances working harder, and wearing out sooner
- More soap and detergent used to get the same result
- Skin that feels dry, hair that feels dull, laundry that feels stiff
- Hours of scrubbing scale off taps, screens and kettles

How a water softener fixes hard water
A salt-based water softener swaps the scale-causing minerals in your water for soft ions, so the scale stops forming. Ours regenerate automatically using a smart meter, and they protect the whole house, from the shower to the hot water system.
- Stops limescale in pipes, heaters and tapware
- Softer skin, silkier hair and brighter laundry
- Reduces soap and detergent use by up to 50%
- Automatic regeneration with a smart meter, so there is nothing to remember
- Protects expensive appliances and plumbing
Water softener vs water filter: which one do you need?
A softener stops scale. A whole-home filter removes chlorine, chloramine and sediment for fresher-tasting water. They do different jobs, so many homes with hard water add both for the best result.
| Water softener | Whole-home filter | |
|---|---|---|
| Fixes | Limescale and hard water | Chlorine, chloramine and sediment |
| You notice | No more white scale, softer-feeling skin, hair and laundry | No pool smell, fresher-tasting water in every tap and shower |
| Best for | Hard water and bore water homes | Homes on city water |
| Starting price (fully installed) | From $5,490 | From $3,490 |

On bore water? Hard water is very common
Bore water is often high in minerals, so scale is usually the first thing people notice. A softener fixes the hardness, and bore and tank supplies often benefit from pre-filtration and UV as well. We check your supply and recommend the full setup.

Common questions
How long does installation take?
Most under-sink installations are completed within 2–3 hours. Whole-house, UV and water softener systems typically take 3–4 hours. We'll give you a clear timeline with your quote.
Is there a warranty on installations?
Yes! All installations come with a 12-month workmanship warranty. Manufacturer warranties on systems range from 1–10 years depending on the model.
Do I need a water softener in South East Queensland?
It depends on your home. The Sunshine Coast is generally soft, Moreton Bay is mid-range, and some Ipswich and regional pockets and most bore water carry plenty of minerals. If you see limescale on taps, screens and kettles, a softener will make a real difference. A free on-site test tells you for sure.
Does a water filter soften water?
No. A standard filter removes things like chlorine, chloramine and sediment, but a salt-based softener is what stops limescale. Many homes with hard water add both, a whole-home filter for fresh taste and a softener for scale.
How do I know if I have hard water?
White chalky scale on taps and shower screens, a crust inside the kettle, spotty glasses and soap that struggles to lather are the classic signs. We can confirm it with a free on-site water test.
How much does a water softener cost?
Water softeners start from $5,490 fully installed by a licensed plumber. Quotes are fixed and no-obligation, and finance is available.
Does a water softener protect my hot water system?
Yes. Softening stops limescale building up in your pipes, hot water system and tapware, which protects your appliances and plumbing.
