How often should you change a water filter?
Most water filters need replacing every 6 to 12 months, depending on your water quality and how much water your household uses. UV systems also need a new lamp about once a year. Your plumber will give you a schedule that suits your system.
| System | How often | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Under-sink filter | Every 6 to 12 months | Quick change under the sink |
| Reverse osmosis | Pre-filters every 6 to 12 months | Later stages last longer, and your schedule shows each one |
| Whole-home filter | Every 6 to 12 months | Harder-working homes and bigger families may need it sooner |
| UV system | Lamp about once a year, plus pre-filters every 6 to 12 months | The alarm tells you if the lamp needs attention |
Why does the timing change from home to home?
Because your filter works harder in some homes than others. Water quality, household size and how much water you use all change how quickly a filter fills up, so a busy family home needs changes sooner than a couple on a quiet supply.
- More sediment in your water means filters clog sooner
- A bigger household uses more water, so filters work harder
- Tank and bore water often needs more frequent pre-filter changes
Signs it is time to change your filter
The pool taste or smell comes back, water flow from the filtered tap slows down, or the water looks cloudy. Any of those means the filter has done its job and needs replacing.
- The chlorine taste or smell is back
- Water comes out of the filtered tap more slowly than it used to
- Cloudy or gritty-looking water
- It has been 6 to 12 months since the last change, even if nothing seems wrong
- A reminder or alarm on your system is telling you it is due
What happens if you leave it too long?
An old filter stops doing its job. You lose the taste benefit, flow slows down, and you can put your warranty at risk, because filters must be replaced at the recommended intervals to keep your warranty valid.
A new filter costs far less than the system it protects, and changing it on time is the easiest way to keep your water tasting fresh and your warranty safe.
Can you change your own filter?
Yes. Most filters can be changed by following the step-by-step guide supplied with your system. Many customers prefer a service visit, because our plumber also gives the whole system a health check while they are there.
- DIY: follow your user guide, switch off the supply, swap the cartridge and flush the line
- Service visit: we replace the filters, check the system and give you a performance report
- Subscription: we send replacement filters to your door on schedule

Common questions
How often do filters need replacing?
In line with global best practices, most systems require filter replacement every 6-12 months, depending on water quality and usage.
How do I change filters?
Whole home filters can be replaced by following the step-by-step process outlined in your user guide. Or, for detailed instructions, visit our Filter Replacement page. This involves switching the system to bypass, depressurising the unit, removing and replacing the filter cartridges as well as restoring flow and flushing the system. If you prefer, our service team can handle replacements for you.
Do you offer filter subscriptions?
Yes. We offer automated reminders and optional subscription services that deliver replacement filters directly to your home on schedule.
Is maintenance required to keep the warranty valid?
Yes. Filters must be replaced at recommended intervals and installation must be compliant to maintain warranty coverage.
How do I know when my water filter needs changing?
The chlorine taste or smell returns, flow from the filtered tap slows, or the water looks cloudy. It is also due once 6 to 12 months have passed, even if nothing seems wrong, or when your system reminder or alarm tells you.
What happens if I never change my water filter?
It stops working properly: you lose the taste improvement, water flow can slow down, and your warranty can be put at risk, because filters must be replaced at the recommended intervals.
How much does filter replacement cost?
It depends on your system. The VIP Filter Care Club is from $299 a year and includes annual filter replacement, a system health check and priority scheduling.
