Is tap water in Brisbane and South East Queensland safe to drink?
Queensland drinking water providers are required to supply safe and reliable water that meets the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines, and they monitor its quality at treatment plants and selected network sites. Your local utility publishes its own water quality results.
The guidelines are published by the NHMRC. They include health-based guideline values and aesthetic guideline values for things like taste, smell and appearance. Your water supplier reports against them.
Many households still choose a filter. The usual reasons are taste and smell, scale from hard water, a preference for fluoride-free drinking water, or simply wanting extra confidence in the glass they pour for their family.

Who supplies the water in your area?
In South East Queensland, Seqwater supplies bulk water and your local utility or council delivers it to your home. Urban Utilities serves Brisbane and Ipswich, Unitywater serves Moreton Bay and the Sunshine Coast, and the Gold Coast, Logan and Redland councils serve their own areas.
| Area | Where to find your water quality information |
|---|---|
| Brisbane and Ipswich | Urban Utilities |
| Moreton Bay and Sunshine Coast | Unitywater |
| Gold Coast | City of Gold Coast |
| Logan | Logan City Council |
| Redland City | Redland City Council |
What is added to Queensland tap water?
Suppliers disinfect drinking water with chlorine or chloramine, which lasts longer in the pipes, and fluoride is added across South East Queensland at 0.8 mg/L under the Water Fluoridation Regulation 2020. These are the usual reasons people notice a taste or choose a filter.
Disinfection is what keeps water safe as it travels through the pipes to your home. It is also why some tap water tastes or smells like a swimming pool.
Whether to reduce chlorine, chloramine or fluoride at your own tap is a personal choice. An activated carbon filter reduces chlorine and chloramine taste, and reverse osmosis reduces fluoride at the tap where it is installed.

What about PFAS, hardness and other things people ask about?
The guidelines set health-based values for PFAS, updated in June 2025, and utilities report their results against them. Hardness is about scale and soap, not safety. If you are concerned about a specific substance, check your supplier report and ask us for a water test.
- PFAS: read your supplier's published drinking water results, and consider reverse osmosis if you want ultra-fine filtration for drinking water
- Hardness: shows up as scale on taps, kettles and shower screens, and a softener or conditioner is the fix
- Taste and smell: usually chlorine or chloramine, and a carbon filter is the standard fix
- Tank, bore or rainwater: not supplied by a utility, so pre-filtration plus UV is the recommended setup
Do you need a water filter in Brisbane?
Tap water meets the guidelines, so a filter is a choice about taste, scale and confidence rather than a necessity. Under-sink filtration improves drinking water at one tap, reverse osmosis gives the finest drinking water, and whole-house filtration covers every tap and shower.
| Option | Best for | Installed price |
|---|---|---|
| Under-sink filter | Better-tasting drinking and cooking water | From $1,190 |
| 5-stage reverse osmosis | The finest drinking water, including fluoride and dissolved salts | From $1,590 |
| Whole-house filter | Chlorine, chloramine and sediment at every tap and shower | From $3,490 |

What does a whole home filtration system filter out?
QLD Water Filtration systems are designed to reduce chlorine, chloramine, sediment and other common impurities found in Australian water supplies. Optional configurations can address additional concerns such as heavy metals or mineral hardness.
How quickly will I notice a difference?
Many homeowners notice improvements in taste, clarity and shower feel immediately. Benefits such as reduced scale build-up and appliance protection become more noticeable over time as treated water flows consistently throughout the home.
How long does installation take?
Most under-sink installations are completed within 2–3 hours. Whole-house, UV and water softener systems typically take 3–4 hours. We'll give you a clear timeline with your quote.
